Rapid Weight Loss, Nutrition and Biomarkers in Martial Arts: Impacts on Performance, Health and Quality of Life

Abstract

Rapid weight loss (RWL) is a common strategy employed by athletes in weight category sports such as martial arts, often with significant consequences on performance, health and well-being. This PhD research investigates the physiological and biochemical effects of RWL, focusing on nutrition, metabolic biomarkers and their relationship with athletic performance and recovery. In particular, it aims to explore the risks of RWL practices in martial arts athletes, including dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and metabolic stress.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, it is important to analyze nutritional strategies that can minimize the negative effects of RWL while optimizing recovery and maintaining peak performance. Furthermore, it will examine the potential long-term health risks and the influence of psychological factors such as stress, anxiety and motivation during RWL phases.

Additionally, I work with broader issues, including the implications of obesity, cancer, and quality of life in sport, evaluating how personalized nutritional interventions can support athletes across the spectrum of health. Clinical assessments of biomarkers with subjective measures of well-being are critical, with the goal of creating evidence-based guidelines for safer and more effective weight management in martial arts and other combat sports.
