Treatments and transformations in mathematics teaching: the role of artifacts
Abstract
This research explores teachers' use and awareness of artifacts in mathematics classrooms, focusing on their epistemological understanding and use of semiotic registers. The study aims to: 1) assess teachers' awareness of artifact use, particularly in terms of treatment and transformation processes; 2) explore how the design and use of artifacts can enhance teachers' competencies; and 3) examine the impact of these competencies on classroom practice.
A mixed methods approach including surveys, case studies and lesson study will be used to collect data. Lesson study will be a central component, providing a collaborative space for teachers to analyze and refine their practice through cycles of planning, teaching, observing and reflecting. By engaging in lesson study, teachers will have the opportunity to experiment with different artifact-based approaches and collectively develop strategies to support student learning and foster a positive school community.
Expected outcomes include:
1) A framework for artifact design and redesign that supports treatment and transformation processes in mathematics classroom practice;
2) recommendations and teacher training programmes that emphasize how artifact-based teaching can contribute to the growth and development of the school community and improve mathematics teaching practices in general.
