Title: The Application of Design Thinking in University Teacher Education: Educational Innovation and Effective Methodologies for Teacher Training
Abstract
In recent years, Design Thinking (DT) has emerged as an innovative methodology not only in the fields of design and business, but also in education. This approach enables the design of learning experiences that are tailored to students’ specific needs, while fostering creativity, collaboration, and empathy. As an effective strategy for addressing complex problems, DT encourages 21st-century teaching competencies that go beyond disciplinary content.
This research project investigates the potential of Design Thinking as a transformative tool in initial teacher education, particularly in university degree programmes for Primary Education and in teacher training pathways for secondary schools. It aims to address the current overemphasis on disciplinary approaches in teacher education by promoting student-centered and active learning methodologies.
The study adopts a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative strategies. Key phases include a systematic review of existing literature, analysis of future teachers' perceptions and challenges, design and implementation of a DT-based training programme for university educators, and the development of practical guidelines for wider dissemination and replication. The ultimate goal is to enhance university teaching effectiveness through the integration of innovative and inclusive methodologies.
