Title

Multidisciplinary "Health Literacy" intervention to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle in preschool children

Abstract

Numerous scientific evidences have reported that nutrition, physical activity and the environment are fundamental determinants of individual's lifestyle. A proper Health Education can contribute in shaping a correct "Health Literacy" (HL) which embraces all these aspects ("Food Literacy", "Physical Literacy", "Environmental Literacy") closely related to health. Given that children spend more time in school than elsewhere or at home, the school is the ideal setting to offer quality health education to large numbers of children.

The aim of the project is to provide knowledge and skills for the acquisition of a sustainable and healthy lifestyle by intervening on the adoption of healthy eating habits, movement habits and respect for the environment through a psycho-social-pedagogical multidisciplinary approach since preschool age, involving children, parents and teachers. This project could be useful for kids to establish a healthy and sustainable lifestyle that can also be maintained for life.

A systematic review of the scientific literature will be conducted to examine the assessment tools globally used to evaluate "Food Literacy", "Physical Literacy" and "Environmental Literacy" in preschool children. Results of this research will be useful to develop and subsequently validate and standardize different assessment tools to be used in the project intervention.

The multidisciplinary educational intervention will be carried out on a large scale, and will involve children, teachers and families of kindergartens of the municipality of Palermo. The overall duration of the intervention will be 16 weeks (for 4 hours a week), with a biweekly frequency (2 hours each).

The developed and selected assessment tools will be used, including: the "Food Literacy Assessment Tool" (preschool-FLAT) to assess Food Literacy, a standardized tool for "Physical Literacy" and a tool for the “Environmental Literacy”. In addition, standardized questionnaires will be administered to teachers and parents to assess Health Literacy.
