PhD project title and a short abstract
Healing the organisations which heal: socio-educational coordinators and the burn out sydrome
The research project develops from the idea of analyzing the criticalities of human behavior in the face of high-stress situations in the workplace, particularly the possible consequences on physical and emotional well-being that lead to symptoms and disorders related to burnout syndrome. Most studies on burnout have primarily focused on professionals in the educational, healthcare, and community sectors, considering that those who perform helping professions—being in daily contact with the difficulties and sufferings of others—are more exposed to emotional tension that gradually undermines their dedication and professionalism.
Research conducted in social and healthcare contexts has shown that there is a differentiated profile of burnout syndrome for doctors, nurses, psychologists, educators, and social workers, as each helping profession has different risk factors and multiple variables that influence performance and relationships with others (Laghi, Crea, Baiocco, Provenzano, 2004). However, research on burnout syndrome needs to be deepened and extended to other professional figures working in the Third Sector, including those in managerial roles. Given the European scenario in which attention to work-related stress has led to a significant increase in alertness from institutions and businesses that have promoted awareness actions on the topic, this research project aims to analyze how burnout does not spare any profession and also involves those in coordination roles. In an organizational context, there is not only a rational and systemic dimension made up of roles and tasks, but also relational and subjective dimensions that leave room for the personal aspects of the individual and their more vulnerable nuances. In a social system, the socio-educational coordinator must balance relational skills with managerial and technical-administrative ones without neglecting the human aspect directed towards collaborators and users.
They continuously navigate different emotional states depending on the contexts: socially, they maneuver through the processes of societal change; economically and politically, they face a system that reduces funding and a social policy that sometimes excludes certain categories; culturally, they engage with diverse cultures that consequently create different needs (Dradi, 2021).
By collecting and deepening the theoretical sources of various authors regarding the phenomenon of burnout, the research proposes: - a review of research on burnout to ascertain the absence of investigations regarding burnout in managerial figures; - a study on the symptoms of burnout manifested by coordinators in the Third Sector-specifically coordinators of educational services and communities - applying the locus of control to evaluate how the weight of their ethical and professional responsibility causes a sense of malaise and chronic stress, leading to a decline in work performance and a collapse of self-esteem;
- possible prevention and promotion strategies for well-being through training and supervision interventions.
