What are the methodological and theoretical characteristics of a semiotic approach to materials? and how can the discipline of semiotics, starting from the analysis of the substances and materials of the world, say something about its own theoretical arrangement? this contribution discusses the relationships between semiotics and the object of study-materials by relating them to the so-called "four rings of semiotics" defined by Paolo Fabbri.
