TOMMASO BARIS

Uno storico liberale e l'Italia unita

Abstract

Rosario Romeo was a major historian of the Risorgimento and of unified Italy. Guido Pescosolido’s volume, discussed here, reconstructs his education, public commitment and historiographical activity, focusing especially on the Italian unification and the birth of the industrial system, insisting on the topicality of his interpretations. Today, these seem linked to Romeo’s liberal culture and cannot always explain key historical turning points, such as the relationship between the liberal state and the masses or the crisis of the former.
