The “ARTEMISIA” Center for Gender Studies and Policies is an interdepartmental Center that is part of a broad perimeter of interventions that the scientific community of the University of Palermo has launched to address gender inequalities.
“ARTEMISIA” carries out research, coordination, impulse, training and Third Mission activities in the field of gender policies, fight against stereotypes, fight against gender violence and violence against gender identity and expression, valorization of diversity and inclusion.
“ARTEMISIA” promotes dialogue with national and international research and training centres, with the school system, with student representatives and the world of Gender Studies and gender policies, with civil society associations.

Scientific support for gender studies
The Center offers scientific support to the University's teaching and research staff by stimulating participation in national and international research projects, promoting access to funding opportunities, networking and the creation of partnerships for collaborative research projects. The Center also aims to coordinate and strengthen the interdisciplinary research network already active in the University on gender studies, encouraging the circulation of knowledge and experiences between experts belonging to different Departments.
Gender mainstreaming in teaching, research and the University's Third Mission
“ARTEMISIA” aims to strengthen gender mainstreaming in teaching, research and the University's Third Mission creating gender-equal working environments where all talents can thrive. It fosters the promotion, among the entire university community, of widespread sensitivity on gender issues through training activities. In fact, the Center promotes the inclusion of specific teachings on gender issues in the University's study courses, the organization of courses and seminar activities aimed at all components of the academic community (students, researchers and administrative staff), stimulating critical thinking on gender mainstreaming in terms of design, content and measurement of results. “ARTEMISIA” organizes and coordinates Third Mission activities of the University aimed at generating sensitivity and knowledge on gender issues outside academic environments as well as at spreading a culture of respect for differences and combating gender violence.
PhD Course in Gender Studies
The development of a specialized and innovative postgraduate course takes stock of the theory and practice of gender studies. It is a centrally managed interdisciplinary and strategic doctoral course with dedicated human resources and budget specifically allocated to train a new generation of doctoral students with the motivation and skills to work towards a society with greater gender equality.
