Abstract

Critical edition, translation and commentary of the fragments of Antiochus of Syracuse taken from the Peri Italias (fragments 2-7 and 9 of the edition by F. Jacoby, Die Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker), which concern the origins of the non-Greek populations of southern Italy (Enotri, Itali, Choni) and eastern Sicily (Siculi and Morgeti), and the birth and development of the geo-political notion of the term Italy; with an introduction to the life, works and transmission of the texts of the first historian of Western Greece.
