Circolazione e uso della moneta nella Sicilia centro-occidentale durante l’età romano-repubblicana: i dati dei contesti

Abstract

The contribution analyzes the coin finds in context from central-western Sicily, relating to the period between the mid-3rd century BC and the end of the Republican age, therefore from the consolidation of Rome’s power in Sicily, after the first Punic war, until the conclusion of the civil wars. The analytical reconnaissance will also involve the hoards, despite the awareness that they rarely come from regular excavations, but represent a privileged observatory for examining the combination of monetary series within each complex. The information deduced from the comparative analysis of individual coin finds and hoards will be able to suggest useful interpretative elements regarding the uses of money by local communities after the occupation of Rome and regarding Rome’s economic response to the numeraire and weight system encountered in Sicily.
