Abstract
The social basis of populism is in the fears of the middle class who experience the effective erosion of their expectations of employment security income. The risk arouses uncontrollable resentment, also because it is exposed to the unscrupulous aims of political profiteers skilled in blowing on the hardships and frustrations that are as real as they are common to people. In Italy there is the curious phenomenon of the growth of negative feelings among the categories of independent workers. The data and analyzes converge on the diagnosis of an increase in social inequalities which penalize the middle classes more than all.
