The essay investigates the motivations that led Croce to take an interest in Imbriani's essay on the 'macchia'. In this essay, Morelli's painting is referred to as an artistic example of a correct, modern and effective aesthetics. This aesthetics is neither imitative nor naturalistic and knows how to shape the emotional and expressive truth of the depicted theme.
