Mechanics, Manufacturing, Management & Aerospace
The Mechanics, Manufacturing, Management & Aerospace Section Coordinator is Prof. Alberto Milazzo; it has 51 teachers and 15 Scientific- Disciplinar Sectors
It focuses the research activity on the field of mechanical, manufacturing, management and aerospace engineering.
The section includes fifteen Academic Disciplines, here described:
Flight Dynamics is related to performance, flight stability and control and flight dynamics of both aircraft and rotorcraft. Correlation between design parameters and aircraft dynamics are performed. Besides, it analyzes the flight in turbulent air. It determines and studies the complete aircraft models (Pilot in the loop, Stability Augmentation Systems, Autopilots, Servos, Sensors, Actuators etc.)
Aerospace Structures and DesignThe research activity of the group focuses on the development of formulations and original models related to: composite multilayered panels and shells, fracture mechanics for traditional materials and innovative composites, smart structures, Structural Health Monitoring, multiscale modeling.
Fluid dynamics The research activities of the group concern the three-dimensional CFD modeling of thermo-fluidodynamic fields and interference phenomena generated by rotating wings, the wing-flutter, the study of aeroacoustic fields.
Aerospace propulsion includes research on subsonic and supersonic aircraft engines such as turbofans, afterburning turbofans, ramjets and research on space and missile propulsion systems such as solid and liquid propellant rocket motors and engines. The research concerns the propulsive systems as a whole, the individual components, the development of specific innovations regarding the applicable sciences as well as the development of technological innovations.
Fluid Machinery is mainly focused on theoretical and experimental study of internal combustion engine employed for road transport, marine transport and power. The group also carries out researches in the field of hybrid propulsion system, and on high efficiency and low polluting energy systems.
Mechanical and thermal measurements. The cultural scopes of the sector cover all knowledge and skills necessary for the definition of methods and procedures for measuring and for the design, implementation, characterization, calibration and testing of measurement systems and experimental investigation of quantities related to the industry, man and the environment
Applied Mechanics develops theoretical and experimental methods, related to the functional analysis and synthesis of machines and mechanical systems, by means of the study of kinematics, statics, dynamics, including vibratory and tribological phenomena. Technological and industrial applications are involved.
Machine Design. The teaching and research issues of the sector concern: the analysis of the mechanical behavior of machine elements and of the materials by which they are realized, the design of machines and machinery, with particular attention to the structural integrity and reliability; the research activities involve both the application and the development of theoretical, numerical and experimental methods of analysis and design.
Design Methods and Tools for Industrial Engineering studies innovative methods and tools for the ideation and the development of new products, by considering the whole life cycle. Particular attention is paid to: design methods, virtual prototyping, shape and topology optimization methods.
Manufacturing and production systems is focused on the study of processes aimed at the transformation of materials and information – through the whole life cycle of products, from design to production and recycle – using, during the different steps, technologies, systems, methods and tools for optimal process design and management. The developed technological solutions – products, processes, systems – will address the growing needs of industry in terms of competitiveness and global sustainability.
Industrial Systems Engineering carries out research and educational activities concerning the general criteria, methodologies and techniques that govern the different phases (i.e. planning, design, implementation, management, operation, maintenance, reconversion and decommissioning) of the life cycle of industrial systems addressed to the production of goods and services.
Bioengineering the activities are focused on the development and clinical implementation of innovative biomedical solutions, aimed at improving patient’ life quality and the burden on healthcare sustainability. These include the biomechanical characterization of native and engineered tissue, the medical imaging and surgical planning, the design of cardiovascular and musculoscheletric bioprosthesis and biomedical devices, the computational modelling of biological systems for the identification of non-invasive prognostic markers for clinical risk stratification.
Managerial and economic engineering The managerial and economic engineering group focuses its research on public and private firms’ management systems, and in particular on the strategy, finance, organization, operations aspects with a strong emphasis on their digital transformation. Current research activities are related to the study of business models based on Internet-enabled platforms, innovation management mainly focused on the open innovation paradigm, capital structure effect on firms’ performance, operations management.
Operations research
Statistics for experimental and technological research carries on researches about problems related with quality improvement, by means of design of experiments aimed to the construction of empirical models, both in manufacturing, for physical systems, and in management, for marketing.
Research groups of M3A section take advantages of a network of collaborations with universities, research centers, non-profit institutions, companies at both national and international levels.
