University of Palermo
PhD in Earth and Sea Sciences (36th Cycle)
Formation activities - general rules
The training activity includes frontal teaching and disciplinary and interdisciplinary seminar activities, training internships abroad and individual science activities on the part of doctoral students.
The II level courses (Master's Degrees, Masters) offered by our or other University (Italian or foreign), must be agreed with the respective tutors and with the Collegio. The III level courses offered by the PhD course in Earth and Sea Sciences are compulsory.
Credits are awarded in the following ways:
Level II courses: the credits decided in the educational offer of the CdS to which the courses refer are valid. For courses taken from different locations: it is the proposing University that establishes the value in credits.
III level courses: it is the proposing Faculty Board (Unipa or other University) that establishes the value in credits.
Language Courses: they must be offered by CLA (Unipa or another University). Credits are attributable after self-certification.
Correspondence hours / credits:
A final verification (obtaining the certification for language courses is optional) is required for the acquisition of credits by the doctoral student; in the event of a negative result, no credit is attributed (only attending the courses does not give the right to credits) and in this case the Collegio dei Docenti will establish the measures to be taken so that the student can recover the missing credits. The methods of verification are established by the teacher who holds the course;
* Second level courses made available by the University: hours / credit ratio defined by each CdS
* III level courses: 1 credit = 5/7 hours of lessons / labs.
Participation to seminars and specialist training and formation activities is subject to approval by Collegio dei Docenti. Participation to congresses, conferences, summer and winter Schools, workshops, training and research periods abroad (min.2 months: 5 credits - 6 months: 10 credits with proportionality criterion), give right to training credits subject to approval by the Collegio dei Docenti.
During the three-year period, the acceptance / submission of at least one work in the ISI journal, relevant to the topic of the doctoral thesis, is required, otherwise the college can propose the postponement of the final exam date by 6 months.
