Presentation
The PhD course in Scienze della Terra e del Mare (Earth and Sea Sciences) offers to PhD students a formation and research program aimed at obtaining a robust knowledge in the fields of physical and natural sciences.
We promote innovative doctoral research programs in the fields of natural Resources and Risks, Geology, Biology, Environment, Ecology and Territory. The doctorate also offers training activities aimed at developing the ability to do research with creativity and scientific rigor, to communicate in English, to interact positively in research and work environments at an international level; to acquire the ability to present research results in a concise and effective form in English, in the form required by the best standards of international journals specialized in the sector.
In particular, the doctorate aims to train researchers in the field of natural resource and risk management, earth sciences, marine biology, and environment. Our ambition is to form a new generation of earth/marine scientists, and/or the next generation of managers with technical-scientific skills. Doctoral researches include (but are not limited to) exploration, evaluation and management of natural (marine, geothermal and mineral) resources, including those of the seabed; management of water resources; fishery; land use and conservations. PhD students at Scienze della Terra e del Mare (Earth and Sea Sciences) will attempt at answering through their research some crucial aspects of environmental, economic and social challenges posed by the future Horizon Europe program (2021-2027).
Research topics of the Earth and Marine Science PhD Course
The PhD course covers all research topics in Earth Science and Marine Biology/Ecology. Specific fields of research include:Geology, Paleontology, Structural Geology, Applied Geology and Geophysics, Tectonics, Seismology and seismic risk Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology, Geo-resources, Volcanology and volcanic risk and monitoring, Marine Ecology, Conservation Biology, Aquaculture, Climate change effects, Applied Ecology, Marine Geology,Agricultural, forestry and biosystem engineering.
Timeline and planning
PhDs last three years (starting in November each year) and a period of stay abroad of 3-6 months in the three years is recommended/required each PhD student. Selected applicants will benefit from international collaborations and science network from staff members of Doctoral Board at DiSTeM, and will have access to existing funds and facilities and/or to new funding opportunities.
Master degree required for applicants
Applicants are required to have a Master Degree (resulting from at least four-year course of study), of the same level of an Italian Master Degree that gives access to the PhD courses. If the degree title has not already been declared equivalent to an Italian one, the Board of Examiners and PhD Coordinator will evaluate its eligibility for the sole purpose of admission to the competition.
Degrees include
Biology, Chemistry Physics, Geology, Geological engineering, Geophysics, Natural and environmental sciences, forestry sciences.
