Transition management spheres : nature-based solutions

Abstract

Today, environmental regeneration is a priority: redeveloping the particular contexts of the built environment while respecting the existing heritage and proposing renewed neighbourhoods in a smart key, according to the use of decentralised energy sources, eco-building, smart mobility and connection circular networks. A regeneration process consists of an articulated and complex system of relationships, where there are material and immaterial resources that have been made suitable for contemporary needs according to multidisciplinary and multi-scalar correlations. The sustainable regeneration project, interacting with the evolutionary actions and tools of strategic planning and social inclusion, must also contribute to the strengthening of resilience, in connec tion with the identity signs that characterise a community and the sense of belonging to places. With this in mind, some of the conditions for conducting a process of environmental regeneration of the built heritage are examined, analysing the critical issues related to public responsibilities, the coherence of objectives and the protection of pre-existences. The research mapped European environmental redevelopment interventions in terms of ecological transition, of which those ana lysed in France and Finland in particular are reported as being highly innovative in terms of sus tainable development. The article presents the results of the progress of the international research project GR.ITA. entitled RDB & Inclusive design – Sustainable tools and strategies for resilient regeneration: nature-based solutions, developed within the Framework Convention for Inter-in stitutional Cooperation between the University of Palermo (UNIPA – Italy) and the University of Granada (UGR – Spain), aimed at deepening the concepts and perspectives of environmental regeneration for the valorisation of the built heritage.
