Abstract

This paper presents a heuristic method to evaluate road intersection performance in urban areas, emphasizing resilience during critical events. The study analyzes pre- and post-event control delay variations at three intersections in Poland, categorized as roundabouts, signalized, or two-way stop-controlled intersections. Efficiency and resilience were evaluated by comparing delay times before and after storms. While traffic signals mimicked stop signs post-disaster, no conclusive optimal intersection configuration was identified due to varying location-specific factors such as size, traffic patterns, and network position. The findings highlight the need to integrate resilience into intersection assessments to guide the selection of resilient intersection types, ensuring stable operation amidst events caused by either natural phenomena or human activities. Future research is required on automating performance metric estimations and conducting corridor-level analysis to promote cooperative driving systems.
