Abstract

Die Box by G. Grass is an autofiction and at the same time a fictional biography, a tale about how stories are written and about the fundamental role of images in Grass's own writing. Last but not least, this story is a tribute to the memory of a lifelong friend, the photographer Maria Rama. A cross-reading of the story "Die Box" and the photo-text Mariezueheren offers the reader a privileged point of observation on Grass's artistic creation process and his artistic imagination.
