LUCIANO SESTA

In mente Dei. Finitezza, passato e verità nella teologia speculativa dell’ultimo Jonas, “Filosofia e Teologia” 2/2014, pp. 304-317

Abstract

The paper presents Jonas' theological perspective on God's problem by appraising its Kantian setting and, at the same time, the tendency of overcoming it in the direction of a new proof of God's existence. This tendency is explicit in a little known article, Vergangenheit und Wahrheit, in which Jonas outlines a rethinking of the concept of God in the light of the particular ontological nature of the 'past'. God presents Himself as a 'universal memory', as a transcendental condition of possibility of the truth of history, as the guardian of the finitude and contingency of each existence. The Author concludes by assuming that this memory can be considered as a form of 'omnipotence' of God, whilst denied by Jonas in his Der Gottesbegriff nach Auschwitz
