Il culto di Santiago tra devozione e politica

Abstract

The article explores the evolution of the cult of Santiago de Compostela, analyzing its historical roots and the political factors that influenced its growth. It highlights the role of the Cluny abbey in promoting the pilgrimage and spreading the cult, strengthening ties between France and Christian Spain. The institution of the pilgrimage followed two logics: a spiritual one, aimed at purification and asceticism, and a political one, aimed at consolidating Christianity in territories contested by Islamic influence. The figure of Santiago is portrayed as a defender of the faith and military leader, integrating with the medieval mythology of the reconquista. Important historical figures, such as Bishop Gelmirez, used the cult as a tool of power to promote Santiago as a central hub of Western Christianity.
