ILARIA SABBATINI

Il pellegrinaggio nel sistema penitenziale del medioevo

Abstract

This essay examines the controversial tradition of pilgrimage in the penitential system of the medieval period, highlighting the perception of pilgrims as sinners, criminals, and women who traveled. The essay explores the judicial pilgrimage practice from late antiquity through the Middle Ages, illustrating how such journeys were often imposed on individuals guilty of serious crimes, including murder and severe sexual offenses. It addresses the gender-specific prejudices against female pilgrims, often accused of adultery and prostitution. Key historical cases and literary references are discussed to underscore the societal and ecclesiastical implications of these penitential journeys.
