Abstract

The research investigates the portrayal of the East in Florentine pilgrimage diaries from the 14th and 15th centuries, focusing on the depiction of Muslim men and women. These diaries have been undervalued historically, considered mere narrative inventions with little documentary worth. However, this study demonstrates their value, revealing a nuanced tradition that combines narrative and memoir. These diaries offer insights into the mentalities of the time, showing a balance between conventional Western views and the firsthand experiences of pilgrims. The study examines how the Islamic world was depicted, influenced by crusade chronicles and the legendary biography of Muhammad. It highlights the cultural and social environment that shaped these perceptions and the evolution of a demonized image of Islam.
