ILARIA SABBATINI

Itinerari matildici in Lucchesia

Abstract

The essay discusses the significance of the Lucchesia region during the time of Matilde di Canossa, focusing on the strategic importance of its road networks and transit areas. On July 10, 1105, Matilde presided over a judgment concerning the properties of Pietro, abbot of Badia Pozzeveri, highlighting the political and economic relevance of the area. The essay details the convergence of various important routes in the region, such as the Via Nonantolana and the Via Bibulca, and their role in the trans-Appennine connections. Lucca, due to its geographical position, emerged as a key urban and political center. This period, marked by significant political events, saw the Lucchesia as a crucial link between Tyrrhenian and Appennine crossings, attracting merchants, feudal lords, military personnel, and pilgrims, particularly those drawn to the relic of the Holy Face of Lucca.
