«I' sono un pellegrin che non ò posa». Vizi e virtù dei viaggiatori in Giovanni Sercambi

Abstract

This essay explores the concept of pilgrimage through the analysis of the representations of vices and virtues in medieval travelers, with a specific focus on the texts and illustrations of Giovanni Sercambi. By examining how Sercambi describes the spiritual dangers and temptations that pilgrims face along the way, the author highlights the symbolic meaning of pilgrimage as a metaphor for human life and its moral challenges. Through a careful analysis of miniatures and poems, the essay illustrates how the themes of poverty, greed, and death are integrated into the pilgrimage narrative, reflecting the spiritual concerns of the Middle Ages.
