ILARIA SABBATINI

Il modello della civitas e la descrizione dello spazio sacro nei pellegrini scrittori di Terra Santa

Abstract

The essay explores the evolution and description of sacred space through pilgrimage diaries to the Holy Land written by Florentine authors. The narrative focuses on how these texts reflect the pilgrims' cultural and religious perceptions, describing the distinction between wild and domestic spaces and the representation of cities as centers of civilization. The authors use antithetical pairs such as wild/domestic and desert/garden to interpret the visited places, highlighting the beauty of cities and the importance of markets. Through the analysis of the diaries, the essay reveals how the pilgrims' personal experiences intertwine with existing narrative traditions, offering a unique view of the cultural interactions between the West and the East during medieval pilgrimages.
