Abstract

The paper presents the development of a dynamic simulation model of an island electric system for real-time simulation. The integration of a battery energy storage system (BESS) controlled in grid-forming mode is considered in the overall real-time model. The Simscape Electrical toolbox of MATLAB/Simulink is used for the development of the model, which is then deployed into an OPAL-RT device for the execution of simulations in real-time. The aspects related to the implementation of the island system for real-time simulation are discussed in detail. The possibility of an extended grid-forming control for the improvement of the dynamics of the system is also presented. Further developments of the work include the real-time examination of the island as a multi-energy system and real-time multi-site co-simulations for power hardware-in-the-loop experiments.
