STEFANO PIAZZA

Le scale dei palazzi siciliani nel XVIII secolo

Abstract

The essay exposes the long architectural debate that took place in Palermo between the 17th and 18th centuries on the topic of stairs in noble residences. Two historical phases are highlighted in particular: The first concerns the use of large external stairs in the context of suburban villas, starting from the first projects of the second half of the seventeenth century, up to the most monumental works of the first half of the eighteenth century, relating the Sicilian experiences to the contemporary Italian ones. The second phase is instead focused on the large scales of the urban homes, built in the fifteen years 1750-1765, the period in which the most important works were carried out. Also in this case the local experiences find significant confirmation in the Italian debate, still achieving scenographic effects of great originality
