Abstract
The information to consumers communicated through the signs relating to geographical indications (lastly implemented with sustainability profiles by the proposal for regulation (Com) 2022 0134 - as amended in June 2023 and as indicated in the EESC opinion (of February 2023) " for sustainability labeling that allows consumers to make sustainable food choices") constitute the basis of a system which, while respecting the right to food understood as "informed food freedom", communicates to consumers to promote the production system and the economy of certain territories, protecting the environment, safeguarding ecosystems and biodiversity (also in compliance with the reformed art. 41 of the Constitution), supporting social cohesion and the centrality of traceability and food safety. The problem, however, arises of the effectiveness of the regulations with regard to the correct information provided to consumers and their difficult justice. A solution may be indicated in the use of technological contracts that involve blockchain and smart contracts which in this field can certainly perform auxiliary functions in terms of effectiveness.
