Abstract
This paper addresses P.Vindob. G 257 and G 29781, discussing several controversial issues relating to Xenophon’s Hellenica I 1, 27-28: the lacuna of fr. b, ll. 9-10, the translation of fr. b, Hermocrates’ direct speech, the papyrus’ relationship with the manuscript tradition, the interplay between the internal political history of Syracuse (411 BC), and the exile of the Syracusan general Hermocrates, operating in the Hellespont in support of Sparta.
