La battaglia di Himera nella ricezione moderna: Grote, Freeman, Holm

Abstract

On the whole the three scholars show a consistent and similar representation of the battle of Himera, agreeing, for instance, on the synchronism between the battles at Himera and Salamis, and on the dependence of Carthaginians from Persians’ initiative (the anti-Greek action would be agreed by Persians and Carthaginians together). Yet while it is possible to glimpse in Grote’s depiction of Sicilian events his democratic and liberal background, Freeman and Holm show a highly ideologised view of the ancient past, which is represented in the light of the feelings of their own times.
