Regeneration strategies for fragile territories as an opportunity for urban, neighbourhood and building recovery.

Abstract

The pandemic has shown that many work activities can be carried out remotely. Community presidia are not simple workplaces, but spaces for collaboration, innovation and dialogue and constitute an opportunity to enhance depopulated territories and an opportunity to rebuild ties between citizens and the territory. The paper examines the success factors of selected practices and reports experimental outcomes on the regeneration of smaller towns from the reuse of abandoned buildings with the function of community presidia. With reference to the sicilian territory, the proposed method analyzes agile work experiences reflecting on possible ways to reuse the building heritage and on the impact that this emerging activity can have for the revitalization of urban and rural areas in the South. The virtuous practices examined are an opportunity to reduce economic, social and territorial gap and mitigate the effects of depopulation in the South, in line with recent national and European funding lines.
