Abstract
For or Against Life. Ecologies of Refusal in Sciascia, D’Arrigo, Bufalino · In three Sicilian books of the 1970s (The Disappearance of Majorana, Horcynus Orca, The Plague-Sower), albeit very distant, there is a recurring inclination to refusing associated life. Such refusal is subtly indicated by Sciascia, D’Arrigo, and Bufalino, as an extreme chance to inhabit a present world in dire straits, whose devastation is represented at its peak by the common setting of World War II. Through the exam of plot’s choices, recurring images, characters’ various natures, it is my aim to highlight the marginal coherence of these characters, since by being apparently passive they give an unforeseen model to reframe in an ecological perspective the human condition.
