Introdurre la quarta natura nella pianificazione in contesti urbani italiani. Il riconoscimento del ruolo socio-ecologico dei novel ecosystem

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of abandoned urban spaces in Italy into novel socio-ecological systems. The proposal is to recognise these as "fourth nature" [Kowarik, 1991], thereby blurring urban dichotomies, as exemplified by Bologna's Prati di Caprara wood and Rome's ex-SNIA Viscosa lake. This approach challenges traditional urban planning by integrating ecological, social, and cultural values into revitalisation strategies for neglected urban areas. It thus contributes to the sustainability goals of the 2030 Agenda, providing ecosystem services, improving air and water quality, and promoting social inclusion.
