Designing Futures: Integrating Service Design and Sustainability in Communication Master’s Programs

Abstract

This paper examines the integration of service design and sustainability in the Master’s program in Communication at the University of Palermo, highlighting the application of the “Manifesto for the Future of Design Education.” It details the curriculum, methodology, project-based learning, and assessment strategies of the service design workshop. Through case studies, the paper demonstrates how students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges, emphasizing ethical and sustainable practices. The findings advocate for the broader adoption of these principles in higher education to equip future designers with the skills to address complex social and environmental issues. The paper concludes by underscoring the importance of transdisciplinary approaches and continuous curriculum evolution to meet contemporary design challenges.
