The paper aims to outline the influence of the condition of the filius familias on the social mobility of the decuriones. It shows that Roman jurists and Emperors used the familiar bond between the filius familias and the pater familiasto reach, at the beginning of the 4th century AD, the curial obnoxietas, a significant restriction to the mobility of the ruling classes of the cities that made up the Empire
