Abstract

The paper analyses some sequences of the second book of Lucan’s bellum ciuile, characterised by an intense representation of the landscape in relation to Pompey and his exploits. The Magnus past successes, as well as the need to attempt new alliances, respond to a skilful ‘direction’ of the Author who anchors the phases of the war to the places that marked the leader’s actions. This meticulous elaboration responds to the geographical interests of the first century A.D. but on the other hand demonstrates a constant attention to the historical datum and to the communicative strategies that Pompey himself had implemented. The impending doom of death, here alluded to, nevertheless filters through the words of the Magnus, making the references to the successes of the past charged with a heartfelt and strongly nostalgic tone.
