Disegni di progetto per la chiesa di Santa Maria di Porto Salvo a La Valletta. Un’ipotesi attributiva

Abstract

The drawings related to the Church of Santa Maria di Porto Salvo, preserved in the Archives of the Dominican Convent of Valletta represent two alternatives for the facade of the church built in the early XIXth century. The high graphic qualities of the drawings and the compositive characteristics could be indicative of the work of a foreing architect, linked with the sicilian latebaroque architectural debate. The attribution to Stefano Ittar, who arrived in Malta in 1784 and worked for the Order of Saint John for the rest of his life, seems to be the most conceivable due to the similarities between the drawings and his previous Sicilian projects, like the church of San Placido in Catania.
