ARMANDO ANTISTA

Infrastrutture per il commercio sul fronte a mare de La Valletta tra XVII e XVIII secolo

Abstract

The construction of infrastructure in the docks areas of the cities overlooking the Great Harbour of Malta offered, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, several opportunities for the urban definition of the waterfronts of La Valletta, Birgu, Senglea, Bormla, through the building of warehouses for the increasing commercial operations, among which the grain trade always played a central role. The long blocks of monumental uniform architecture grown in these urban margins, also with the involvement of the engineers of the Order. Those buildings came to consitute the first image offered to the foreigners and thus contributed to the renewal of the imago urbis, representing self-celebration and legitimation of power.
