Un gruppo di studenti dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo, in visita per studio e ricerca presso la Florida International University (FIU), ha preso parte alla XXIII edizione del South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF) di Miami, uno dei più significativi eventi nel panorama enogastronomico internazionale.

Presentato da Capital One e promosso da Food Network, il SOBEWFF è organizzato dalla FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. Il festival, della durata di 4 giorni, vanta più di 100 eventi nelle aree di Greater Miami e Miami Beach, con la partecipazione di celebrità enogastronomiche di livello internazionale, quali chef stellati, sommelier, influencer. Ogni anno, più di 1500 volunteer, tra cui studenti, docenti e staff della Chaplin School, offrono il proprio contributo al festival. Anche quest’anno, gli studenti dell’Università di Palermo hanno partecipato attivamente in termini di organizzazione e gestione del festival.

“Ho avuto l'opportunità di partecipare al SOBEWFF, a Miami Beach. È stata un'esperienza coinvolgente e variegata: ho trascorso una giornata nel Green Team, aiutando a promuovere l’eco-sostenibilità, un'altra nella registrazione degli ospiti e i restanti due giorni nell'Event Support, contribuendo al successo generale dell'evento. È stata un'esperienza arricchente che mi ha permesso di vivere da vicino l'organizzazione e la logistica di un grande evento come il SOBEWFF”, condivide la dott.ssa Giulia Calabrini, studentessa del corso di laurea magistrale in Tourism Systems and Hospitality Management che sta trascorrendo un periodo di studio presso la Chaplin School grazie al quale otterrà il doppio titolo di studio.

“La partecipazione al SOBEWFF è stata un'occasione unica per conoscere e sperimentare da vicino l’organizzazione e la gestione di un mega evento. Nella qualità di volunteer ho potuto offrire il mio supporto sia come parte del Green Team che nell’Event Support”, aggiunge la collega dott.ssa Giulia Garofalo a Miami per un Percorso di Studio Integrato (PIS).

“L’esperienza al SOBEWFF è stata davvero unica e ricca. Ho svolto servizio di volontariato per quattro giorni, in quattro diversi ruoli: back of house demo support, front of house greeter, welcome center and registrations, e back of house production event support. La partecipazione al SOBEWFF mi ha dato anche la possibilità di ricevere interessanti opportunità di tirocinio e lavoro”, commenta Mina Edward, dottore magistrale in Tourism Systems and Hospitality Management che sta frequentando la Chaplin School per ottenere il secondo titolo di studio presso l’ateneo americano.

“Lo scenario food & beverage di Miami, che riflette la diversità culturale della Magic City, offre un’esperienza interessante anche dal punto di vista scientifico. A tal proposito, sono entusiasta di aver effettuato, durante il dottorato di ricerca in Scienze Economiche e Statistiche, un periodo di formazione e ricerca incentrato sul digital branding presso la Florida International University e la Destination Marketing Organization di Miami, GMCVB. La collaborazione con il prof. John Buschman, esperto di marketing per il turismo e l’ospitalità, è stata particolarmente preziosa, producendo diverse attività di carattere didattico e scientifico tra UNIPA, FIU e GMCVB” afferma il dott. Walter Spezzano, dottorando del dipartimento SEAS.

“Anche quest’anno ho scelto di trascorrere un periodo a supporto dei nostri studenti, svolgendo attività didattica e di ricerca presso la Chaplin School. Il percorso che i nostri studenti hanno scelto è sicuramente impegnativo, ma vantaggioso per la loro formazione e carriera professionale. UniPa offre un supporto anche economico, oltre che organizzativo e didattico, con un impegno continuo attraverso i tanti programmi di mobilità internazionale” commenta il prof. Stefano De Cantis, Coordinatore del Corso di Studio in Tourism Systems and Hospitality Management e delegato del Rettore a supporto dell’internazionalizzazione.

“Il numero dei doppi titoli con università straniere è in continuo aumento ed abbiamo superato ad oggi il numero di 60, principalmente sulle lauree magistrali in inglese. Tuttavia, questo con la Chaplin School rimane il primo accordo di doppio titolo con un'università degli Stati Uniti, e costituisce un riferimento essenziale per ulteriori accordi. I benefici formativi e curriculari per i nostri studenti ci ripagano degli sforzi che l'Università di Palermo sta compiendo per accelerare il processo di internazionalizzazione dell’Ateneo, attestato anche quest’anno dall’incremento del 30% del numero di studenti di nazionalità straniera iscritti ad UniPa” conclude il prof. Fabio Mazzola, Prorettore alla Didattica e alla Internazionalizzazione.

Students from the University of Palermo contribute to the success of the SOBEWFF in Miami

A group of students from the University of Palermo, visiting Florida International University (FIU) for study and research purposes, participated in the 23^rd edition of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF), one of the most significant events in the food and beverage scene worldwide, held in Miami. Presented by Capital One and promoted by Food Network, SOBEWFF is hosted by FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. The four-day festival features over 100 events across Greater Miami and Miami Beach, with the participation of international food and beverage celebrities such as starred chefs, sommeliers, and influencers. Each year, more than 1,500 volunteers including students, faculty, and staff from the Chaplin School, contribute to the festival’s success. This year, students from Palermo have actively participated in the organization and execution of the festival.

“I had the opportunity to take part in the SOBEWFF, in Miami Beach. It was an engaging and diverse experience. I spent one day in the Green Team, helping to promote eco-sustainability; the day after, I supported guest registration; and on the two remaining days, I took part in the Event Support team, contributing to the overall success of the event. It was an enriching experience that allowed me to understand the organization and logistics of such a big event like the SOBEWFF”, shares Giulia Calabrini, a student of the master’s degree program in Tourism Systems and Hospitality Management, participating in the Double Degree program between Unipa and FIU.

“Participating in the SOBEWFF was a unique opportunity to learn about and experience up close the organization and execution of a mega event. As a volunteer, I offered my support both as part of the Green Team and in the Event Support”, adds Giulia Garofalo, a student of the master’s degree program in Tourism Systems and Hospitality Management, participating in the Integrated Study Program (PIS) between Unipa and FIU.

“The SOBEWFF experience was very unique and rich. I volunteered for four days, in four different positions: back of house demo support, front of house greeter, welcome center and registrations, and back of house production event support. Participating at the SOBEWFF also gave me the opportunity to receive interesting internship and job opportunities”, comments Mina Edward, graduated in Tourism Systems and Hospitality Management and attending the Double Degree program.

“The food and beverage scene in Miami, which reflects the cultural diversity of the Magic City, offers an interesting experience from a scientific perspective as well. In this regard, I am enthusiastic to have undertaken a training and research period focused on digital branding at Florida International University and Miami’s Destination Marketing Organization, GMCVB, during my PhD in Economics and Statistics. The collaboration with Prof. John Buschman, an expert in marketing for hospitality and tourism, has been particularly valuable, leading to various educational and scientific activities between UNIPA, FIU, and GMCVB”, affirms Walter Spezzano, a PhD candidate at the SEAS Department.

“This year as well, I have chosen to support our students, carrying out teaching and research activities at the Chaplin School. The journey that our students have chosen is absolutely demanding but valuable for their education and future careers. Unipa supports students financially, in addition to providing teaching and organization support, always promoting international mobility programs”, comments Prof. Stefano De Cantis, Coordinator of the master’s degree program in Tourism Systems and Hospitality Management, and Rector’s delegate for internationalization.

“The number of the double degree programs with foreign universities is continuously increasing, and to date, we have exceeded the number of 60, mainly in regard to master’s degree programs delivered in English. However, the one with the Chaplin School remains the first double degree agreement with a US university, and it serves as an essential reference for further agreements. The educational and curricular benefits for our students repay the efforts that the University of Palermo is making to accelerate the internationalization process of the University itself, as evidenced by the 30% increase in the number of foreign students enrolled at Unipa this year”, concludes Prof. Fabio Mazzola, Prorector for education and internationalization.
