Istituito nel 2008, il programma Outstanding Referee riconosce ogni anno circa 150 dei referee attualmente attivi per il loro inestimabile lavoro. Paragonabile alla Fellowship nell'APS e in altre organizzazioni, questo è un premio a vita. La selezione di quest'anno è stata fatta attraverso 40 anni di record su oltre 78.400 referee che sono stati invitati a valutare i manoscritti scientifici. La base per la selezione degli Outstanding Referee tiene conto della qualità, del numero e della tempestività dei report, senza riguardo per l'appartenenza all'APS, al paese di origine o al campo di ricerca. Sono stati esclusi gli individui con collegamenti diretti alle riviste, come editori e membri del comitato editoriale.
I vincitori del 2021 provengono da 31 paesi diversi, con grandi contingenti da Stati Uniti, Germania, Regno Unito, Canada e Francia. Tutti i destinatari di questo riconoscimento sono stati informati e hanno ricevuto una spilla e un certificato per commemorare il loro successo. La selezione per questo traguardo è sempre difficile e APS esprime il proprio apprezzamento a tutti i referee che contribuiscono a rendere la Physical Review collection tra le riviste di fisica più citate al mondo.
Gli sforzi di questi studiosi non solo mantengono gli standard delle riviste scientifiche ad un livello elevato, ma in molti casi aiutano anche gli autori a migliorare la qualità e la leggibilità dei loro articoli, anche quelli che non sono pubblicati da APS. Gli Outstanding Referee devono essere congratulati e ringraziati per il loro eccezionale servizio alla comunità dei fisici.
Instituted in 2008, the Outstanding Referee program annually recognizes approximately 150 of the currently active referees for their invaluable work. Comparable to Fellowship in the APS and other organizations, this is a lifetime award. The selection this year was made from 40 years of records on over 78,400 referees who have been called upon to review manuscripts. The basis for the Outstanding Referees selection takes into account the quality, number and timeliness of a referee’s reports, without regard for membership in the APS, country of origin, or field of research. Individuals with current or very recent direct connections to the journals, such as editors and editorial board members, were excluded.
The 2021 honorees come from 31 different countries, with large contingents from the U.S., Germany, U.K., Canada, and France. All recipients of this distinction have been notified, and sent a lapel pin and a certificate to commemorate their achievement. The selection for this achievement is always difficult and APS expresses its appreciation to all referees that help make the Physical Review collection some of the most cited physics journals in the world.
The efforts of these individuals not only keep the standards of the journals at a high level, but in many cases also help authors improve the quality and readability of their articles—even those that are not published by APS. The Outstanding Referees are to be congratulated and thanked for their outstanding service to the physics community.
