The graduate program aims to produce scientists operating on the field of geology. The program is flexible and is individually tailored to each Student. The Ph. D. program, which culminates with a thesis dissertation, typically requires 3 years. For admission a Master degree is required.

The followingresearch themes can be developed:

Marine Geology in continental shelf and ocean basins: researches on phisiography, sedimentary dynamics and tectonics in the Sicilian offshore (marine geology, marine hazards, marine geophysics).

Dynamic evolution of coastal areas: sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, morphodynamics, paleontology, tematic mapping.

Crustal evolution of the Sicilian-Apenninic orogen in the central Mediterranean: geological researches on the Sicilian region and surrounding marine areas through the land and marine geological mapping, stratigraphic and mesostructural analysis, seismostructural analysis.

Basin analysis: Researches on the stratigraphic architecture and dynamics of the Meso-Cenozoic sedimentary basins in the Maghrebian–Apenninic orogen and the central Mediterranean.

Neotectonics and active tectonics: analysis of active deformations in the Sicilian chain and the Tyrrhenian margin, with aim to recognize the main seismogenic fault segments.

Morphogenesis in the Mediterranean environment: genesis of landforms linked to the Plio-Pleistocene and Holocene evolution of various sectors of the Sicilian chain and foredeep areas, focused on the analysis of the morphotectonic setting and on the study of the karstic morphogenesis.

Hydrogeological risk: susceptibility to landslide and soil erosion phenomena both of regolith materials and bedrock, earthquake-induced landslides, genesis and evolution of deep-seated gravitational slope deformations; exceptional rainfalls, flood events, location of high-risk areas.

Biostratigraphy, Eco-biostratigraphy and Paleoecology: Micropaleontological and paleontological analyses of Mediterranean Neogene sequences (land sections and deep sea sediments) and their environmental reconstruction in a frame of high resolution stratigraphy.

Hydrogeology: analysis of the hydrogeological structures, intake areas, mode of feeding and discharge; aquifer pollution vulnerability and production of specific thematic mapping.
