Mission Statement
The Palermo Legal Clinic for Human Rights offers law students a program of legal education aimed at developing and consolidating their theoretical and practical skills, and fostering their sense of social responsibility, through their active engagement in a legal aid office (sportello orientamento legale).
Paying attention to the protection needs of vulnerable individuals, such as migrants and asylum seekers, and taking into account the lawyers’ and associations’ efforts for their defence, the Legal Clinic for Human Rights also aims to support local actors’ activities, by encouraging their synergy and collaboration.
For the students’ benefit, the clinic aims at:
- Providing high level training in National, European and International Law, in particular on immigration, asylum, discrimination, labour exploitation and trafficking;
- Providing methodological tools for research and analysis in order to develop a critical approach in the resolution of legal issues arising from real cases;
- Raising students’ awareness on the challenges faced by migrants and asylum seekers in accessing justice and rights;
- Increasing students’ skills on file management, e-mail writing, public speaking;
- Offering vocational guidance.
For the community’s benefit, the clinic aims at:
- Establishing a legal aid office;
- Providing local associations, legal offices and other institutions with support in solving practical legal issues;
- Encouraging collaboration between local institutions and associations.
- Fostering a sense of social responsibility in future lawyers and legal operators.
