Educational objectives and professional opportunities for graduates
The 2nd cycle degree course in “History of art” provides students with advanced education in the field of historical-artistic subjects with competences in the various sectors of figurative arts, which range both in time - from the Middle Ages to the Modern and Contemporary Age - and in space - from the Byzantine to the Western world. The course covers thematic areas from strictly historical to methodological disciplines.
The course aims to equip students with good computing skills for individual production, publishing and classification of historical-artistic heritage, as well as with methodological competences needed for an in-depth bibliographical research, and for the study and interpretation of primary or secondary sources.
The educational programme covers a wide range of specialist historical and artistic subjects such as History of drawing, Phenomenology of contemporary art, Textile history, Iconography and Iconology, Comparative history of art in the European countries. Moreover, the course includes disciplines dealing with methodological and critical approach to the study and analysis of artistic phenomena and their transmission models such as Methodology of the study of decorative arts, Didactics and communication of contemporary art, History of art criticism, History of miniature.
The course offers a variety of different teaching and learning modes including seminars, professional practice within the most important Museums of Palermo such as Museo Diocesano, Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Abatellis, lectures and practice which aim to provide the necessary competences to carry out traditional or web-based bibliographical and documentary research.
The professional opportunities envisaged for 2nd cycle graduates in History of Art are:
- art historian;
- superintendent of national cultural heritage;
- director of museum;
- high responsibility roles in public or private conservation institutions;
- curator and conservator of museums and institutions;
- cataloguer of historical and artistic heritage;
- specialist consultant for museum didactics and initiatives of preservation and conservation of historical and artistic heritage;
- expert for the promotion and implementation of exhibitions and cultural projects;
- trainer of cultural tourism workers;
- Research centres;
- Art expert;
- teacher in schools after passing the national teaching qualification examinations;
- lecturer in academies of fine arts and University after completing the education through research doctorates.
Graduates can also find a job in cultural foundations or publishing industry dealing with specialised books and press.
