First double degree in Technologies and Sciences for human Healt On June 13th, the first dual-degree Ph.D. program in “Technologies and Sciences for Human Health” concluded successfully. Dr. Kleopatra Kalouta defended her thesis titled “Sustainable Biomaterials from Plant Proteins: Green Electrospinning and Applications in Drug Delivery,” earning her Ph.D. from both the University of Palermo and the University of Copenhagen.

Sandra Filiciani was the first PhD graduate in "co-tutela" from the Universidad Abierta Interamericana (Argentina) and the Università degli Studi di Palermo (Italy). On July 4th, Sandra Filiciani, a physician and plastic surgeon, completed her doctorate and became the first PhD student to receive from the University of Palermo (UNIPA; Italy) and the Universidad Abierta Interamericana (UAI; Argentina) a double doctor degree in "cotutela" in Technology and Sciences of Human Health (cycle XXXVI) and in Medicine, respectively. Her research focused on developing a new mesh for breast reconstruction. She conducted the initial stages of the study, manufacturing, and testing at the D'Amore Lab of the RiMed Foundation located within the University of Palermo. After that, the preclinical application took place in Argentina. She was supervised by an Argentine, Dr. Enrique Pedro Gagliardi, MD, PhD, and an Italian tutor, Professor Fabio Caradonna (UNIPA), and co-tutors, Professor Antonio D’Amore (RiMed Foundation). She also received mentorship from Dr. Laura Modica de Mohac, and all friends and colleagues from D'Amore Lab collaborated at every step. Integrative teamwork was crucial to the learning process and achieving results. The collaboration between the PhD in Technology and Sciences of Human Health (cycle XXXVI) coordinated by Prof. Bruno Pignataro (UNIPA) and the PhD in Medicice directed by Prof. Alicia Mattiazzi (UAI) was stimulating, contributed significantly over two years and opened interesting perspectives for future work.

(13/03/2024) Prestigioso premio da parte della Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. "ll dottorando Emanuele Vitale, al secondo anno di dottorato, è risultato vincitore di un prestigioso premio da parte della Cystic Fibrosis Foundation che ha sede negli USA. In particolare Emanuele, che in questo momento si trova a Philadelphia per svolgere un periodo di ricerca presso il laboratorio del Prof. Barry Cooperman alla UPENN University, ha ricevuto un 2024 Student Traineeship Award. Si tratta di un premio per sovvenzionare un periodo di tirocinio al fine di introdurre gli studenti alla ricerca attraverso la partecipazione a progetti di ricerca rilevanti per la fibrosi cistica.
