Antonino Maurizio Vaccaro born in Palermo (Italy) in 1974, graduated in Biological Sciences in 1998 and got his PhD in Animal Biology in 2003 at the University of Palermo with a dissertation on the rearing of a sturgeon hybrid in an experimental fish farm in Sicily and the study of their muscular fatty acid profile. From 1997 to 1999 he attended three courses of the University of Palermo on marine benthonology, carried out at the marine protected area Ustica island: 1) Research Methods on zoobenthos of hard substrate; 2) Research Methods on zoobenthos of Posidonia oceanica; 3) Analysis of gradients in the marine benthic fauna. In 2000 he participated in the 30th course of the International School of Biophysic “A. Borsellino” on “Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Marine Resources”, held at the Centre for Scientific Culture “Ettore Maiorana”, Erice (Italy). In 2003 he participated in the high formation course entitled “Design and analysis of monitoring and experiments for environmental scientists”, held at University of Bologna (Italy). In 2013 he participated in the Marine Zoology course sponsored by UZI (Italian Zoological Union), entitled “Amphipod Crustacean taxonomy”, with practical implementations for the identification of Mediterranean Amphipod species. In the academic year 2004/2005 he was lecturer of the course “Elements of Ecology” at the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of the University of Palermo. Since 2003 to now, he participated in various research projects at LABIOMAR, particularly on aquaculture or marine ecology topics. Since 2001, he has worked continuously for some public research agencies and environmental monitoring, as well as for private companies of services, consulting and research for fishing, aquaculture, environment.
He is currently Research Fellow at the Department of Earth and Marine Science (DiSTeM) of University of Palermo on a project entitled “Development of advanced eco-sustainable technology aimed at the restoration and rehabilitation of degraded coastal marine areas”. Another main research activity in the last years focused on the formulation of innovative diet for aquaculture of new invertebrate species.
He is coauthor of some papers published in scientific journals:
